Tips to Prepare Your Pool for Cooler Temperatures

Winterizing Your Swimming PoolWinter is right around the corner. Therefore, if you haven’t gotten around to preparing your pool for the cold weather, now is the time to do it. By winterizing your pool properly, you’ll be able to rest easy as you wait for ideal swimming weather to return.

Here are some things Texas pool owners can do to prepare their pool for the winter.

Test or Install a Freeze Guard to Your System

Many pools in the Lewisburg, TX area have freeze guards, which are simply a thermal sensor that automatically switches your pump on and circulates your pool water when it’s near freezing. If you don’t have one, they’re a godsend! Rather than having to go out in your housecoat to freeze your tail off to turn your pump on when the temperature drops, you can instead let the freeze guard to its job. With that in mind, make sure it’s tested and working properly before the cold hits!

Check Your Pool Equipment

Pools use a variety of different plumbing equipment, including a wide range of valves, pumps and other important pieces. With so many things at work, it’s prudent to have your systems checked and tested to make sure everything is a go and is working right when it’s cooler outside. This could save you a major headache down the road if there is something amiss with your system.

Remove Leaves and Other Debris

Check your skimmer baskets often in the fall and winter! Once the leaves really start falling, it’s vital you empty your skimmer basket; failing to do so will cause a backup! Some people choose to cover their pools if they have a lot of trees in their backyard, but since you must keep your water level up, you’ll still need to routinely take care of your pool and use the right chemicals. As a general rule of thumb, you should still do the things you do during swim season, but just a little less of it since chlorine lasts longer when the water cools down.

Make Sure Your Backwash Line is Drained

If you have a waterfall, it’s vital you make sure your backwash line is drained. If you don’t run your waterfall all the time, you may need to winterize those pumps by pulling the drain plugs. Failing to do so could turn your waterfall into an iceberg!
